Rudder

The rudder is the underwater fin used to steer. It hangs off the stern of the boat and is turned by either a tiller (a stick) on small boats or a wheel on larger ones. Pushing the tiller away from the side you want to turn toward — tiller toward port turns the boat to starboard — is counterintuitive at first.
