Keel

The fixed fin under the boat that resists sideways motion.

The keel is the fixed fin under the boat that resists sideways motion when wind pushes on the sails. Most cruising keels are weighted with lead or iron to add stability — the weight of the keel keeps the boat from tipping over. Small dinghies use a retractable centerboard instead of a fixed keel. Without a keel or centerboard, a sailboat would slide downwind rather than sailing forward.
