Halyard
A line used to raise a sail.
A halyard is a line used to raise (haul up) a sail. The mainsail halyard goes up the mast to the head of the main; the jib halyard does the same for the jib. Halyards are typically led back to the cockpit on modern boats. Don't confuse halyards with sheets — halyards go up, sheets go in and out.
